Bill Waris (1944–2007) was a tough campaigner and political deal-maker with a deep compassion for the poor. As Jackson County Executive in the 1980s, he secured long-term deals keeping the Chiefs and Royals in Kansas City, expanded recreation with projects like Longview Golf Course and Christmas in the Park, and led a major property reappraisal. A former basketball coach and principal, he later became a successful lobbyist in Jefferson City. Faith-filled and devoted to family and community, Waris dedicated his life to service and helping others.

Tim Waris founded the Bill Waris Bluejays in 2007 to honor his late father, Bill Waris, fulfilling his father’s wish to “keep the kids playing basketball.” Over the years, he has coached his children, nephews, and countless others, leaving a lasting impact on young athletes. A successful Parochial League coach with nine championships, Tim also coached Sion High School freshman, JV and assistant varsity. He now serves as the freshman coach at Saint Michael’s High School. Since his fathers passing in 2007, he has hosted many basketball camps and ten fundraising tournaments, raising over $500,000 for Catholic schools and families in need across Kansas City.

Tim Waris Jr. grew up playing for the Bill Waris Bluejays. Today, he spends his time as a teacher and basketball coach at St. Pius X High School in Kansas City, where he inspires students both in the classroom and on the court. Tim is known for his commitment to developing fundamentals, teamwork, and character. His passion working alongside his father in coaching reflects the family’s dedication to faith, service, and helping young athletes grow on and off the court.
